Panellist on MIT Bootcamps Graduate Panel

December 01, 2021 by Tinni Choudhury in bootcamp

Early morning today, at 1 AM in fact, I stayed awake to take part in the MIT Bootcamps Graduate Panel as a panellist. I spoke on the topic of “How to make the most of the Bootcamp community”. The full agenda was:

10 – 10:10 am ET → Introductions led by MIT Bootcamps team

10:10 - 10:25 am ET → Helena Franco, MMSc-GHD candidate at Harvard Medical School: how to adopt lessons learnt from the Bootcamp into your professional and personal life

10:25 - 10:40 am ET → Sharmin (Tinni) Choudhury, CTO of Kyco Australia: how to make the most of the Bootcamp community

10:40 - 10:55 am ET → Gareth Hewlett, Digital, Data & Network Convergence Director, Consumer CTIO at BT: how to think like a start-up for people used to working in a corporate environment

10:55 - 11:10 am ET → Giannina Gambini, Growth Manager Country at Tuxpas - Workplace from Facebook Partner: how to work with people from very different from yourself – whether it’s background, culture or personality

11:10 – 11:30 am ET → General Q&A (moderated by Bootcamps team)

I wasn’t as fluid with my speaking as I wanted to be and I feel I went for a bit too long. But I did cover the ground I wanted and encouraged the new MIT Bootcamp graduates to continue to say yes to opportunities to interact and participate with MIT Bootcamp community activities.

I truly believe that the power of “yes” is the way to get the most out of the MIT Bootcamp community. Whether that means saying yes to events, panels like the one this morning or just yes to organising something yourself, thus putting yourself out there and opening yourself to interaction and opportunities is the way to get the maximum benefit from the Bootcamp community.

To be fair, that’s the way to get the most out of any community but especially true of startup and research land I feel just because networking is so much more important within both. So go say yes to good, interesting opportunities from trusted sources. I have to qualify because I don’t want people to be so open that their brains fall out. There are way too many scams out there for me to encourage people to say yes without adding a word of caution. But still, do not doubt the power of yes!

StartMIT & MIT Fuse: Plus mini MIT Bootcamp Reunion

February 08, 2021 by Tinni Choudhury in meetup, bootcamp

In my last post, I mentioned that I was glad to have said yes in 2019 to the MIT Bootcamp. I couldn’t remember at the time if MIT Bootcamp took place in some form in 2020. Last week, I was reminded that the MIT Bootcamp was not slated to come to Brisbane in 2020 nor 2021. Instead, the QUT and MIT collaboration is now taking place through StartMIT & MIT Fuse - two other MIT programs.

My understanding is that StartMIT is a lighter introduction to entrepreneurship then MIT Bootcamp. While MIT Fuse is for established startups looking for a more tailored framework through which to analysis and contextualise their experience and journey. They both have their own niche and place but I think the in-person Bootcamp was probably the best for me. So while I could have done something had I said no in 2019 to the Bootcamp, I am still glad I said yes when I did.

Of course, a perk of being a Bootcamp alumnus is that I was invited by Professor Rowena Barrett to a meet and mingle with this year’s participants of the StartMIT and MIT Fuse programs. The event took place last Wednesday. I got to meet some new nodes in the MIT network. As well as reconnect with some old ones like my Bootcamp mate Justin George, along with Bootcampers from other years, so a good way to February!

Group Mentoring with Nyree McKenzie

Group Mentoring with Nyree McKenzie

March 09, 2020 by Tinni Choudhury in talks

I spent the first Friday of March by attending a group mentoring with Nyree McKenzie, the founder of Bidhive and a fellow MIT Bootcamp Alumni. She also won the AWS 2019 Founder of the Year.

It was a great session that covered Nyree’s journey and the lessons she learnt along the way. She emphasised the need to have your personal life aligned with your founder dreams. She talked about how her previous business, Thought Bubble, that she spend 16-year building was both a source of inspiration that lead to Bidhive but also something she now has to exit to commit to Bidhive.

She pointed to some tech she found very helpful. Namely Canny, which she is using to gather customer feedback to help her map out a product roadmap that will lead to her releasing exactly what her customers want. It’s a great idea. I will note that tool down for future use.

Speaking of tools, and a slight aside, I don’t think I ever mentioned Kiite.ai, which can be used to create a sales playbooks. It was recommended to me during a sales workshop I attended. But I don’t think I ever blogged about it. But I think it’s worth noting here. Because sales strategies were something Nyree covered at length. She mentioned that from day 1 she only went after enterprise, using language that would cause small businesses to self exclude. Enterprise can be a mixed market to go after but it has its downsizes. Namely, procurement processes for Enterprise are long and complex. So the conversion takes time. Also, per Lewl Jury’s mentoring talk last month, Enterprise customers are very needy when it comes to customer care attention.

Nyree has earmarked Robotic Process Automation (RPA) as a way to help ease some of the pressure currently on her small group of staff. RPA is something I am familiar with through my work with Comprara. I will definitely watch Bidhive to see how Nyree’s strategies workout.

Overall, it was a great talk. I am glad I attended. I asked a bunch of questions. But I left straight after and thus missed the River City Labs, First Friday Bytes. I wish I stuck around but I was “peopled out” as they say. But maybe in April, I’ll get to attend the First Friday Bytes!

February In Review: What have I been doing!

March 01, 2019 by Tinni Choudhury in bootcamp, misc, business

February might be the shortest month of the year, but February 2019 felt like a whole year to me! My life is noticeably different then it was on February 1st, and I don’t just mean because of the passage of time! So what’s been happening?

MIT Bootcamp

I am sure people are sick of hearing me talk about it. But the week I spent at the camp was an intense experience. I certainly feel like I packed a few months worth of learning into a long, 18+ hour week. I am glad I took the opportunity offered to me. It was a blast!

I am now slowly but surely trying to revive Virgo 19 using the 24 steps. I am in the middle of generating 108 ideas. I am in no hurry, and that’s good because I want to do this right!

Abide Gets Into Impact Boom Elevate+

As soon as the MIT Bootcamp ended, I got the opportunity to apply what I learnt in the context of Abide and the Impact Boom Elevate+ social enterprise accelerator. Our paired mentor for the program, Tobias Speck of PWC, is a more on the lean startup side but that’s okay. We are not a methodology purist, and we know we have to show results within a short period. So we will use whatever methodology we need to get our startup going. But my co-founder and CEO, Andy Smith, is finding the Disciplined Entrepreneurship as insightful as I do!

JOSARI Gearing-up to apply to Collider

I will write a post explaining JOSARI, it’s a video based micro-consulting platform, and my involvement with them soon! But for now, I am excited to be working with them to apply for the Collider accelerator. Watch this space for updates!

Not continuing with Your Happy Place

Not everything that happened in February was positive through addition. I have posted about Your Happy Place a couple of times before, the first post being in November. My contract with them was to get an MVP of the people, personality and places concept out in a usable format. I was successful in achieving this goal: Your Happy Place the app, is available for download from Google Play Store. However, Your Happy Place is not the right fit for me going forward. But the concept remains as viable and interesting as ever. I hope to see Your Happy Place be a resounding success as it goes on. However, from my point of view, I think this is positive through subtraction for both myself and Your Happy Place.

Hospitals, hospitals and more Hospitals!

To finish off this update on a more personal note. I physically crashed badly after returning from the MIT Bootcamp. I later found out this is because my blood iron had dropped to dangerous levels again. I am getting an iron infusion this coming Sunday, and my doctor thinks after the infusion I should be able to relax for the next six months.

In addition to my health woes, my poor niece also suffered. She came down to Brisbane from Townsville for what was supposed to be a week-long vacation. However, she ended up staying for two weeks, with the last week hospitalised from a mysterious virus. She got out less than 24 hours ago, but she has mended enough to be back to her happy self. So I am glad we are leaving the medical drama behind in February and starting March on a fresh note all around!
